What are the different kinds of veneers?

Today, we utilize two types of dental veneers:

Composite or direct veneers are made of a special plastic that is molded and bonded directly to the tooth in one appointment.
Porcelain or indirect veneers are thin shells that are custom-made in a lab and applied to the teeth. These require two appointments: one for taking an impression and a second for preparing the natural teeth and placing the veneers. Lumineers®, a new porcelain veneer, do not require any tooth-buffing before placement.

What is a veneer procedure like?

At your first appointment, Dr. Sands will take an impression of your teeth so he can create custom veneers that address your dental needs and cosmetic goals.

During your second appointment, your teeth are "buffed," and a small amount of natural tooth is removed. This will compensate for the added thickness of the veneers, so your teeth will be the same size they were prior to the procedure. Before bonding, Dr. Sands will confirm that your veneers are the correct shape, size and color. The veneers are then bonded in place with the help of an etching solution and a special light. Typically, porcelain veneers will last for about 10-15 years.
