Dental Phobia More Common than You Think
We all know that going to the dentist can be a daunting task for some people, but just how many folks are living with dental phobia? Researchers at Sydney University wanted to find that out. International news agency, Sky News, reports today on their surprising findings.
Special needs dentist, Dr. Avanti Karve, led a team of researchers who studied dental anxiety and phobia for five years. So, just how many people are affected? “Despite advances in the dental practices, up to 40 per cent of the western population shudders at the thought of the dentist's chair, Dr Karve said,” reports Sky. What’s even more surprising, however, is just how long “dentophobics” wait to seek qualified dental care. According to Sky, “People with severe dental anxiety put up with severe dental pain for an average 17 days before making an appointment, compared to three days for other people, a recent telephone survey found.”
