Cosmetic Dental Procedures Covered by Insurance

Individuals often believe that the costs of cosmetic dentistry will not be subsidized by insurance. This is not entirely true, and it is dependent upon the specific procedure that is selected.

What Cosmetic Procedures Does Dental Insurance Cover?

Of course, coverage is entirely dependent upon the specific insurance premium, but many offer assistance for the following:

  • Replacement of porcelain veneers - few insurance companies will provide coverage for new porcelain veneers, but when they are deteriorating and need replacing for the health of a patient's teeth, it is a different story. Provided a dentist submits the treatment plan in a way that indicates it is for health, and not just appearance, companies that provide this type of coverage should do so.
  • Repair of chipped or damaged teeth - insurance companies specifically offer coverage when it is the front teeth that have chips or other damage. They may or may not provide coverage for teeth not immediately visible in the mouth of an individual.
  • Dental injuries - when an accident causes damage to the mouth, repairing the teeth may be covered by either dental insurance or medical insurance.
  • Replacement of old crowns - many insurance companies will cover the replacement of crowns. They do also improve appearance as today's are far more subtle.
