California Dental Hygienists Urge Greater Awareness Of "Meth Mouth" As An Early Indicator Of Abuse
With methamphetamine addiction continuing to skyrocket, the California Dental Hygienists' Association (CDHA) today called on the public to understand that decaying teeth can be one of the first warning signs that a family member or loved one is abusing the drug.

Mouth Cancer Awareness Week 16 - 22 November 2008, University Hospital Of South Manchester NHS Foundation Trust
Specialist nurses at Wythenshawe Hospital are this week raising awareness of mouth cancer, a disease which is on the increase and affects 5,000 new people in the UK each year. In the last 10 years, the number of new mouth cancer cases has increased by more than 30%. Whilst men are twice as likely to develop mouth cancer, there are now more cases amongst women and around 1600 people die of mouth cancer every year.

Fluorescence Used To Develop Method For Detecting Mercury In Fish, Dental Amalgam
Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh have developed a simple and quick method for detecting mercury in fish and dental samples, two substances at the center of public concern about mercury contamination. The technique involves a fluorescent substance that glows bright green when it comes into contact with oxidized mercury, the researchers report in the current online edition of the Journal of the American Chemical Society.

Growth And Generation Of Brain Cells Stimulated By Stem Cells From Monkey Teeth
Researchers at the Yerkes National Primate Research Center, Emory University, have discovered dental pulp stem cells can stimulate growth and generation of several types of neural cells. Findings from this study, available in the October issue of the journal Stem Cells, suggest dental pulp stem cells show promise for use in cell therapy and regenerative medicine, particularly therapies associated with the central nervous system.

New Deputy Chief Dental Officer, Department Of Health, UK
Sue Gregory has been appointed as the new Deputy Chief Dental Officer at the Department of Health, it was announced today. Sue will replace current Deputy Chief Dental Officer, Tony Jenner, who is leaving the Department of Health after six years. The appointment will take effect in January 2009. Sue is currently the Consultant in Dental Public Health for Bedfordshire, Luton and Hertfordshire Primary Care Trusts.

OHSU Finds Association Between Epstein-Barr Virus, Inflammatory Diseases Of The Mouth
Researchers at Oregon Health & Science University's School of Dentistry have found that a significant percentage of dental patients with the inflammatory diseases irreversible pulpitis and apical periodontitis also have the Epstein-Barr virus. The Epstein-Barr virus is an important human pathogen found in more than 90 percent of the world population.

Chewing Gum From BioGaia Containing Lactobacillus Reuteri Prodentis Reduces Inflamed Gums
A new study confirms that chewing gum from BioGaia containing Lactobacillus reuteri Prodentis reduces gingivitis (inflamed gums). The study also shows that the Lactobacillus reuteri Prodentis can interact directly with the human immune system to reduce inflammation. The study, published by Acta Odontologica Scandinavica, was performed by Professor Svante Twetman and his team in the Department of Cariology and Endodontics at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark.

Center For Dental Studies Successfully Completes $1M Grant Phase
The California Center for Advanced Dental Studies (CCADS) has successfully completed its first graduating class of doctors. Fifteen doctors from all over Northern California have completed a unique ten month educational program designed to advance their clinical skills in the area of cosmetic dentistry. Along with other recipients worldwide, educational grants in the amount of $18,500 were awarded to each doctor in this select group.

Award Of $1.6 Million For Eastman Dental Center To Find Ways To Prevent Cavities
The National Institutes of Health has awarded Eastman Dental Center's Hyun (Michel) Koo, D.D.S, Ph.D., $1.6 million to continue his work on preventing dental caries, the single most prevalent and costly oral infectious disease in the U.S. Dental caries (decay) results from the interaction of specific bacteria (such as Streptococcus mutans) with dietary sugars.
